American Express Company, incorporated on June 10, 1965, together with its subsidiaries, is a global services company. The Company's principal products and services are charge and credit card products, and travel-related services offered to consumers and businesses around the world. The Company's segments include the Global Consumer Services Group (GCSG), Global Merchant and Network Services (GMNS), and Global Commercial Services (GCS). The Company's range of products and services includes network services; merchant acquisition and processing, servicing and settlement, and point-of-sale marketing and information products and services for merchants; other fee services, including fraud prevention services and the design and operation of customer loyalty programs; expense management products and services, and stored value/prepaid products.
The Company's products and services are sold to diverse customer groups, including consumers, small businesses, mid-sized companies and large corporations. These products and services are sold through channels, including online applications, direct mail, in-house teams, third-party vendors and direct response advertising. Business travel-related services are offered through its non-consolidated joint venture, American Express Global Business Travel (the GBT JV). The Company's cards include cards issued by American Express, as well as cards issued by third-party banks and other institutions that are accepted by merchants on the American Express network. The Company offers a range of charge cards and revolving credit cards to consumers in the United States and internationally through its USCS and ICNS segments. In addition to its cards, the Company partners with banks and other organizations to issue American Express-branded products.
Global Consumer Services Group
Global Consumer Services Group, which primarily issues a wide range of proprietary consumer cards globally. GCSG also provides services to consumers, including travel services and non-card financing products, and manages certain international joint ventures and its partnership agreements in China.
Global Merchant and Network Services
Global Merchant and Network Services, which operates a global payments network that processes and settles card transactions, acquires merchants and provides multi-channel marketing programs and capabilities, services and data analytics, leveraging its global integrated network. GMNS enters into partnership agreements with third-party card issuers and acquirers, licensing the American Express brand and extending the reach of the global network. GMNS also manages loyalty coalition businesses in certain countries around the world and its reloadable prepaid and gift card businesses.
Global Commercial Services
Global Commercial Services (GCS), which primarily issues a wide range of proprietary corporate and small business cards and provides payment and expense management services globally. In addition, GCS provides commercial financing products.
