Compass Minerals International, Inc. (CMI), incorporated on December 17, 1993, is a provider of essential minerals that solve nature's challenges, including salt for winter roadway safety and other consumer, industrial and agricultural uses; specialty plant nutrition minerals for the quality and yield of crops, and specialty chemicals for water treatment and other industrial processes. The Company has three segments: Salt, Plant Nutrition North America and Plant Nutrition South America. The Salt segment produces and markets salt and magnesium chloride for use in road deicing and dust control, food processing, water softeners, and agricultural and industrial applications. Its Plant Nutrition North America segment includes sales of sulfate of potash (SOP) specialty fertilizer and micronutrients. The Plant Nutrition South America segment operates two primary businesses in Brazil: agricultural productivity, which manufactures and distributes offerings of specialty plant nutrition solution-based products that are used in direct soil and foliar applications, as well as through irrigation systems and for seed treatment, and chemical solutions, which manufactures and markets specialty chemicals, primarily for the water treatment industry and for use in other industrial processes.
As of December 31, 2016, the Company operated 22 production and packaging facilities. Its salt business provides highway deicing salt to customers in North America and the United Kingdom, as well as consumer deicing and water conditioning products, ingredients used in consumer and commercial food preparation and other salt-based products for consumer, agricultural and industrial applications in North America. In the United Kingdom, the Company operates a records management business utilizing excavated areas of its Winsford salt mine with one other location in London, England. Its plant nutrition business produces and markets specialty plant nutrition products to distributors and retailers of crop inputs, as well as growers. Its principal plant nutrition product in North America is SOP, which the Company markets under the trade name Protassium+. The Company also sells various micronutrient products under its Wolf Trax brand. The Company sells its salt and plant nutrition products primarily in the United States, Canada, Brazil and the United Kingdom.
Through its Salt segment, the Company produces and markets sodium chloride and magnesium chloride in North America and sodium chloride in the United Kingdom. Its Salt products include rock salt, mechanically evaporated salt, solar evaporated salt, brine magnesium chloride and flake magnesium chloride. While the Company also purchases potassium chloride (KCl) and calcium chloride to sell as finished products or to blend with salt (sodium chloride) to produce specialty products, sodium chloride represents the majority of the products the Company produces and sells. Its Salt products are used in a variety of applications, including as a deicer for highway, consumer and professional use, as an ingredient in chemical production, for water treatment, human and animal nutrition and for a variety of other consumer and industrial uses. The Company produces Protassium+ at facilities located in North America, namely at its Ogden, Utah, facility, on the Great Salt Lake, and its Wynyard, Saskatchewan, Canada facility on Big Quill Lake.
