Olympus Corporation, incorporated on October 12, 1919, is engaged in the manufacture and sale of precision machineries and instruments. The Company's segments include Medical Business, Scientific Solutions Business, Imaging Business and Others. The Medical Business segment manufactures and sells medical endoscopes, surgical endoscopes, endotherapy devices and other products. The Scientific Solutions Business segment manufactures and sells biological microscopes, industrial microscopes, industrial endoscopes, non-destructive testing equipment and other products. The Imaging Business segment manufactures and sells digital cameras, voice recorders and other products. The Others segment manufactures and sells biomedical materials, conducts system development and other business activities. The Company's technologies include optical technologies, electronic imaging technologies, precision technologies and biological based technologies. The Company has a service network consisting of over 200 sites on approximately six continents.
The Company's Medical Business segment consists of various business units, which include gastrointestinal business unit, general surgery business unit, urology/gynecology business unit, medical service business unit, and ear, nose and throat (ENT) business unit. The Medical Business segment offers gastrointestinal endoscopes, such as endoscopy systems, which include videoscopes, video processors, light sources and liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, and peripheral equipment, which include image recording device, endoscope cleaning systems and sterilization systems; surgical devices, which include surgical video endoscopy systems, peripheral devices for endoscopy surgery and electrosurgical knives, and endotherapy devices, which include biopsy forceps, grasping forceps, stone retrieval and lithotripter baskets, and hemostasis accessories.
The Company's Scientific Solutions Business segment offers life science products and industrial products. Its life science products include upright microscopes and polarizing microscopes, inverted microscopes, laser confocal microscopes, box-type fluorescence imaging devices, stereo microscopes, fluorescence macromicroscopes, microscope digital cameras, imaging software, bio-imaging software and virtual slide systems. Its industrial products include metallurgical microscopes, semiconductor inspection microscopes, laser microscopes, measuring microscopes, industrial videoscopes, industrial fiberscopes, industrial rigid scopes, ultrasonic flaw detectors, eddy current flaw detectors, phased array flaw detectors and peripheral equipment. The Company's Imaging Business offers digital cameras, which include mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras, compact digital cameras, digital camera-related products, digital camera lens barrels and optical components, and others, which include binoculars.
The Company competes with Fujifilm Corporation, HOYA CORPORATION, Boston Scientific Corporation, Stryker Corporation, KARL STORZ GmbH & Co. KG, Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc. and Medtronic, Inc.
