SCANA Corporation, incorporated on October 1, 1984, is a holding company. The Company, through its subsidiaries, is engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity in South Carolina. The Company operates through segments, including Electric Operations, Gas Distribution, Gas Marketing and All Other. The Company is engaged in the purchase, transmission and sale of natural gas in North Carolina and South Carolina. The Electric Operations segment generates, transmits and distributes electricity. The Company's regulated businesses include subsidiaries, such as South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G), South Carolina Fuel Company, Inc. (Fuel Company), South Carolina Generating Company, Inc. (GENCO) and Public Service Company of North Carolina, Incorporated (PSNC Energy). The Company's nonregulated businesses include subsidiaries, such as SCANA Energy Marketing, Inc. (SCANA Energy), ServiceCare, Inc., SCANA Services, Inc., SCANA Corporate Security Services, Inc. and SCANA Communications Holdings, Inc.
The Gas Distribution segment consists of local distribution operations of SCE&G and PSNC Energy. The Gas Distribution segment purchases and sells natural gas, primarily at retail. The Gas Marketing segment consists of the marketing operations of SCANA Energy, which markets natural gas to retail customers in Georgia, and to industrial and commercial customers and municipalities in the Southeast. The All Other segment includes the parent company, a services company and other non-reportable segments. As of December 31, 2016, the Company's subsidiary, SCE&G, was engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity to approximately 709,000 customers, and the purchase, sale and transportation of natural gas to approximately 358,000 customers. As of December 31, 2016, SCE&G's electric service territory extended into 24 counties covering approximately 16,000 square miles in the central, southern and southwestern portions of South Carolina. As of December 31, 2016, the service area for natural gas consisted all or part of 35 counties in South Carolina, and covered approximately 23,000 square miles. Its resale customers include municipalities, electric cooperatives, other investor-owned utilities, registered marketers and federal and state electric agencies. SCE&G serves industries, including chemicals, educational services, paper products, food products, lumber and wood products, health services, textile manufacturing, rubber and miscellaneous plastic products, and automotive, tire and fabricated metal products.
The Company's subsidiary, GENCO, owns A.M. Williams Generating Station (Williams Station), and sells electricity, to SCE&G. Fuel Company acquires, owns and provides financing for SCE&G's nuclear fuel, certain fossil fuels and emission allowances. As of December 31, 2016, the Company's subsidiary, PSNC Energy, purchased, sold and transported natural gas to approximately 555,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers. As of December 31, 2016, PSNC Energy served 28 counties covering approximately 12,000 square miles in North Carolina. PSNC Energy serves industries, including educational services, food products, health services, automotive, chemicals, non-woven textiles, electrical generation and construction.
