Shaw Communications Inc. (Shaw), incorporated on December 9, 1966, is a diversified connectivity provider. The Company operates through four divisions: Consumer, Wireless, Business Network Services and Business Infrastructure Services. Under the Consumer division, the Company offers Cable telecommunications and Satellite video services to residential customers. Its Business Network Services division offers data networking, Cable telecommunications, Satellite video and fleet tracking services to businesses and public sector entities. Its Business Infrastructure Services division offers data center colocation, cloud technology and managed information technology (IT) solutions to businesses. The Company offers wireless services for voice and data communications through its Wireless division.
The Company's wireline network comprises North American fiber backbone, regional fiber optic and co-axial distribution networks, and local Shaw Go WiFi connectivity. Its wireline-network includes multiple fiber capacity on two cross-North America routes. The southern route consists of approximately 7,000 kilometers of fiber located on routes between Seattle and New York City (via Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Buffalo and Chicago). The northern route consists of approximately 4,000 route kilometers of fiber between Edmonton and Toronto (via Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Thunder Bay). Shaw also uses a marine route consisting of approximately 330 route kilometers from Seattle to Vancouver (via Victoria), and has secured additional capacity on routes between a number of cities, including Vancouver and Calgary, Vancouver and San Jose, Toronto and New York City, Seattle and Vancouver, and Edmonton and Toronto
The Company's wireline services include broadband Internet, Shaw Go WiFi, video and phone to customers that are connected to its local and regional hybrid fiber-coax network. Through satellite services, the Company provides video by satellite to customers across Canada. The consumer division connects families in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northern Ontario on its hybrid fiber-coax network. The Company also offers WideOpen Internet 150, which provides 150 megabits per second (Mbps) download speeds.
The Company's wireline services offer a selection of television channels, including approximately 120 high definition (HD) channels and over 10,000 on-demand, pay-per-view and subscription movie, and television programming titles. The Company's wireline video customers can choose from a selection of primary packages and can add additional channels from a range of sports, family and other theme specialty packages as well as a number of individual channels offered on a channel-by-channel basis. The Company also offers a basic service, Limited TV, and provides small, medium and large theme packs. The Company enables its customers to subscribe for a primary package (including Limited TV), any theme packs they choose, and add-on individual channels on a channel-by-channel basis. The Company also offers cloud-based X1 video platform to its wireline video customers, which enables customers to view across multiple screens and devices both in and out of the home. The Company has launched the X1 mobile application, FreeRange TV, for its wireline video and satellite customers. The Company's phone service offers a residential digital telephone service through its wireline network.
The Company's consumer division connects families across Canada with video and audio programming by satellite. The Company's customers have access to over 550 digital video channels, including approximately 220 HD channels and over 10,000 on demand, pay-per-view and subscription movie and television programming titles. The satellite customers also can choose from a selection of channel packages and can add from a range of sports, family and other theme specialty packages, and a number of individual channels that it offers on a channel-by-channel basis. The Company's Shaw Direct is a satellite video service, which is available across Canada.
The wireless division provides its services through a wireless network infrastructure. The Company's wireless division operates in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, and is also focused on the metropolitan markets in and around Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa and Toronto. The Company launched Freedom Mobile, a wireless service. The wireless division holds approximately 50 Megahertz (MHz) of Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum in the main service areas of Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, and 10-50 MHz of AWS spectrum in certain other non-core markets. The division also provides its services on a third generation evolved high speed packet access (3G HSPA+) network using AWS-1 spectrum.
Business Network Services
The business network services division provides business customers with a suite of connectivity and managed services, including Internet, data, wireless fidelity (WiFi) and phone. The Company's business network services serve business and public sector customers by connecting customers of all sizes to its wireline-network or by satellite with a range of communications services, from home offices and regional businesses to various enterprises. The services offered by the Company include Fibre Internet, which comprises fiber Internet solutions from 10 megabits per second to more than 10 gigabits per second (Gbps); Data Connectivity, which is a private connectivity for multiple locations, and voice solutions, which include services that connect customer premise equipment to the phone network, single voice line solutions and hosted unified communications functionality. It also offers video and audio service offering content for public viewing. Its Broadcast Video service is focused on offering video across North America in real time
The Company also offers a Smart suite of services. SmartVoice is a unified communications solution that integrates instant messaging, presence, e-mail, video conferencing and a mobile application. SmartWiFi is an Internet solution that enables wireless connectivity for employees and guests in the office and on the go. SmartSecurity is a network security platform that protects a wired and WiFi network at the edge with access control, content filtering and connecting branch locations. The Company's broadcast services include satellite relay distribution undertaking (SRDU) and signal transport services to approximately 300 distribution undertakings and redistributes over 500 television signals and over 100 audio signals in both English and French to multi-channel system operators. Shaw Tracking provides asset tracking and communication services primarily in Canada.
Business Infrastructure Services
The Company, through ViaWest, Inc, a hybrid IT solutions provider, offers colocation, cloud and managed services, and security and compliance assessment and mitigation capabilities. The ViaWest operates in approximately 30 datacenters. The Company's Shaw Data Centre and Cloud Solutions offers a product set of hybrid IT solutions to enterprises of all sizes throughout Canada. It offers security, compliance, development operations and infrastructure consulting services.
