Verizon Communications Inc., incorporated on October 7, 1983, is a holding company. The Company, through its subsidiaries, provides communications, information and entertainment products and services to consumers, businesses and governmental agencies. Its segments include Wireless and Wireline. The Wireless segment offers communications products and services, including wireless voice and data services and equipment sales, to consumer, business and government customers across the United States. The Wireline segment offers voice, data and video communications products and services, such as broadband video and data, corporate networking solutions, data center and cloud services, security and managed network services, and local and long distance voice services. The Company has combined Yahoo! Inc operating assets with its existing AOL Inc. business to create a new subsidiary, Oath Inc, a diverse house of more than 50 media and technology brands. The Oath portfolio includes HuffPost, Yahoo Sports, AOL.com, MAKERS, Tumblr, BUILD Studios, Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Mail.
The Company's Wireless segment, doing business as Verizon Wireless, provides wireless communications services across wireless networks in the United States. As of December 31, 2016, Verizon Wireless had 114.2 million retail connections. It also provides fourth-generation (4G) Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology and third-generation (3G) Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) networks. The Company offers wireless services on a postpaid and prepaid basis. Retail (non-wholesale) postpaid accounts primarily represent retail customers under contract with Verizon Wireless that are directly served and managed by Verizon Wireless and use its branded services. The Company offers various postpaid account service plans, including shared data plans, single connection plans and other plans to the needs of its customers. Its shared data plans feature domestic unlimited voice minutes, unlimited domestic and international text, video and picture messaging, cloud storage and a single data allowance that can be shared among the wireless devices on a customer's account.
The Company also offers a range of wireless services accessible on a range of its devices. It also offers service that enables its customers to access the Internet wirelessly at broadband speeds on notebook computers and tablets. Customers can access multimedia offerings, provided by it and by third parties, consisting of applications providing music, video, gaming, news and other content. Its business-focused offerings include solutions that enable customers to access the Internet, their corporate intranets and e-mail across its diverse portfolio of wireless devices. Its location-based services provide its customers with directions to their destination and enable its business customers to locate, monitor and communicate with their mobile field workers. Its global data services allow its customers to access data services and the Internet on all smartphones and many tablets and basic phones from international destinations that it sells.
The Company's customers can make and receive calls on their home phone handsets using its wireless network through its Home Phone Connect service or Verizon 4G LTE Broadband Router with Voice service. It also offers LTE Internet (Installed) that provides customers with Internet connections in their homes using the Company's 4G LTE network. The Company provides network access and, in some cases, services to support wireless connections for the Internet of things (IoT). Its IoT services offer end-to-end solutions for various IoT vertical markets, such as fleet management and telematics, energy, agricultural technology and smart communities. It provides in-vehicle solutions that enable vehicle navigation, global positioning system (GPS) tracking, engine diagnostic monitoring and maintenance alerts. It offers solutions targeted to providing the energy sector with visibility into energy usage and the ability to monitor devices used to track energy usage. It provides solutions that give farmers data they need to improve yields and save costs. Its solutions enable localities to collect data from IoT and connected machine technologies to improve public safety, managing traffic, reducing pollution, identifying revenue generation opportunities.
The Company offers a range of wireless devices, including smartphones and basic phones, tablets and other Internet access devices. The smartphones offered by the Company are enabled to utilize the Company's 4G LTE and/or 3G EV-DO high-speed data services and run on operating platforms, such as Apple iPhone Operating System (iOS) and Google Android. The Company offers tablets from a range of manufacturers. The tablets run primarily on the Apple iOS, Google Android operating systems. In addition, the Company offers Jetpacks that provide a mobile wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) 4G LTE and/or 3G EV-DO connection and are capable of connecting multiple Wi-Fi enabled devices to the Internet at one time. The customers can also access the Internet wirelessly at broadband speeds on their computers through data cards, universal serial bus (USB) modems or with certain laptop computers and netbooks enabled to access its wireless network. The Company also offers a range of international wireless voice and data services to its customers through roaming arrangements with wireless service providers outside of the United States. Its primary network technology platforms are 4G LTE and 3G code division multiple access (CDMA). The Company also offers mobile Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) service.
The Company's Wireline segment provides voice, data and video communications products and services. The Company organizes its service and product offerings by the customers groups, which includes Consumer Markets, Enterprise Solutions, Partner Solutions and Business Markets. Consumer Markets operations provide broadband services, including high-speed Internet, Fios Internet and Fios Video services, and local exchange, including basic service and end user access, and long distance, including regional toll, voice services to residential and small business subscribers. The Company offers Fios Internet and high-speed Internet services with varying throughput speeds.
The Company offers video service over its fiber-optic network. It has various offerings available to its Fios television customers, including Fios Quantum TV, which provides customers the ability to record up to 12 shows at once and control live television from any room in their home; Fios Custom TV, which provides customers local versions of the Fox, CBS, NBCU and ABC broadcast stations and other similar local content and offers customers the option of purchasing an Essentials plan that includes a base set of lifestyle, entertainment, pop culture and content for children and national news networks, or a Sports and More plan that includes national and regional sports networks, as well as non-sports national networks, and Fios on Demand, which gives Fios customers the ability to watch content virtually anytime and anywhere, on any compatible device. It offers voice services that include local exchange, regional and long distance calling and voice messaging services, as well as VoIP services, which use the Internet or private broadband networks to transmit voice communications.
Enterprise Solutions offers services and other communications services to medium and large business customers, including multinational corporations, as well as state and federal government customers. Verizon Enterprise Solutions offers an array of information and communication technology services, including Global Internet protocol (IP) network, cloud, and information technology (IT) solutions, and business communications, IoT, data, security and mobility services. The Company's networking products and solutions primarily include Private IP, and Ethernet access and optical networking services. Private IP service enables customers across the world to communicate over a private, secure network using a range of access methods, including Ethernet and Verizon Wireless 4G LTE. Its Ethernet portfolio includes access service that allows customers to connect network environments around the world.
The Company offers IT infrastructure services that include colocation and managed hosting in data centers around the globe. Its cloud services include computing, storage, backup, recovery and application platforms its customers rely on to run their business operations. Business communications services include IP communications services, which simplify network management and drive operational efficiencies by enabling the convergence of voice and data traffic on the same access connection; Internet access, which provides enterprise customers with high-bandwidth access to its global network; unified communications and collaboration capabilities, which enable customers to communicate in real-time through VoIP and IP conferencing, and emergency communication services, which allow customers to respond to emergencies while maintaining business continuity. It offers a suite of data security services to help companies secure their networks, data, applications and infrastructure from security threats. Its core services include core voice and data services, which consist of a portfolio of global solutions utilizing traditional telecommunications technology, such as conferencing and contact center solutions, and private line and data access networks. Core services also include providing customer premise equipment, and installation, maintenance and site services.
Partner Solutions provides communications services, including data, voice, local dial tone and broadband services primarily to local, long distance and other carriers that use the Company's facilities to provide services to their customers. Partner Solution's services include data services, voice services and local services. The Company offers a portfolio of data services with varying speeds and options. Its data services include digital data offerings, such as Ethernet and Wavelength services, as well as core data circuits, such as DS1s and DS3s. Data services also include business services, including Managed services, Mobility offerings and Security services. Managed services offer wholesale customers to outsource the management of their networks, security, remote access and Web applications to Verizon. Mobility enables wholesale customers to enhance their portfolio to triple-play or quad-play capability by leveraging wireless devices and services offered through Verizon Wireless that can be packaged and resold under their own carrier brand. Security provides wholesale customers integrated solutions to help their enterprise end users secure their networks and data. The Company provides switched access services that allow carriers to complete their end user calls that originate or terminate within its territory. It offers an array of local dial tone and broadband services to competitive local exchange carriers. In addition, the Company offers services, such as colocation, resale and unbundled network elements in compliance with applicable regulations.
Business Markets includes United States-based small business customers. Business Markets also includes United States-based medium business customers, state and local government customers and educational institutions.
