Whiting Petroleum Corporation, incorporated on July 18, 2003, is an independent oil and gas company. The Company is engaged in development, production, acquisition and exploration activities primarily in the Rocky Mountains region of the United States. It is engaged in the exploration and production of crude oil, natural gas liquid (NGLs) and natural gas. The Company's Northern Rocky Mountains operations included its properties in the Williston Basin of North Dakota and Montana targeting the Bakken and Three Forks formations and encompassing approximately 736,000 gross (443,800 net) developed and undeveloped acres, as of December 31, 2016. The Company's Central Rocky Mountains operations included properties at its Redtail field in the Denver Julesburg Basin (DJ Basin) in Weld County, Colorado targeting the Niobrara and Codell/Fort Hays formations and encompassing approximately 157,200 gross (132,200 net) developed and undeveloped acres, as of December 31, 2016. The Company's other operations primarily relate to non-core assets in Colorado, Mississippi, North Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.
As of December 31, 2016, the Company had interests in 4,687 gross (1,917 net) productive wells on approximately 849,300 gross developed acres across its geographical areas. It sells its oil and gas production to end users, marketers and other purchasers that have access to nearby pipeline facilities. Its estimated proved reserves in the Northern Rocky Mountains, as of December 31, 2016, were 450.8 Million Barrels of Oil Equivalent (MMBOE) (63% oil).
As of December 31, 2016, the Company had four rigs active in the Williston Basin. Its estimated proved reserves in the Central Rocky Mountains, as of December 31, 2016, were 160.7 MMBOE (68% oil). Its Redtail gas plant processes the associated gas produced from its wells in this area, and has an inlet capacity of 50 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d). As of December 31, 2016, properties under its other operations contributed 4.0 MMBOE (90% oil) of proved reserves to its portfolio of operations, which represented 1% of its total estimated proved reserves and contributed 0.8 thousand of barrels of oil equivalent per day (MBOE/d) of average daily production.
