Every year, goods and services are traded across the world (31 trillion dollars in 2022, WTO-UNCAD estimate). Trade creates new economic opportunities and has a significant impact on worker conditions and the environment.

In this context, it can be difficult for companies to find and maintain the right balance between generating profit and avoiding harmful behavior towards people and the planet. However, by making the appropriate efforts, companies can help safeguard that the benefits of trade are not outweighed by negative effects. That is sustainable trade.

At amfori we believe that people, planet, and profit can work together. We believe in a world where all trade delivers social, environmental, and economic benefits for everyone. It is what we call ‘trade with purpose’.

“Climate and working conditions, people, and planet, go hand in hand. If we are not doing well for the climate, we are also not doing well for the people” said Linda Kromjong, amfori president.

Founded in 1977 by a group of international trading companies, the mission of amfori is based on collective leverage driving positive impact on environmental, social and governance (ESG) conditions in their supply chains. Collaboration is at the heart of amfori’s vision as the challenge for a more sustainable world cannot be tackled on an individual company basis.

Today, amfori is a leading global business association, with 2,500 members across 52 countries. With a network of 17 local experts, amfori offers direct support to better understand and improve ESG performance in members’ supply chains. amfori also helps its members to reinforce their performance on due diligence and collect information to better understand, mitigate and remediate risks that are linked to their own activities and those of their suppliers.

Through a variety of services and practical tools and solutions, amfori supports companies to map, identify and mitigate ESG risks in their supply chains. Events, training, and webinars facilitate the sharing of knowledge and experiences amongst members. Finally, amfori’s advocacy team monitors current legislative procedures and ensures long-standing relationships with policymakers, decision-makers, and key stakeholders.

Companies are operating in a fast-changing world, with increasing regulatory pressure to improve sustainability in their supply chains. At the same time, consumers, NGOs, and civil society are raising concerns about social and environmental responsibilities of companies. In this context, amfori supports its members by engaging directly with relevant stakeholders, giving them a voice, and helping them to thrive thanks to a conducive and collaborative environment.

Sustainability needs to be considered as an investment rather than a cost. Companies embracing it will see positive long-term effects, such as a motivated workforce, better fulfillment of consumer demands, greater adherence to legislation, and increased attractiveness for ESG investment.

Systemic change takes effort and needs time. amfori believes that continuous reinforced collaboration is key to better anticipate potential risks, focus on prevention, and mobilize efforts to foster tomorrow’s sustainable world.
