SATA and the quest for sustainable connectivity in the Azores

In 1941, five daring Azorean entrepreneurs wanted to connect the Azores to the world. To do so, they founded the Sociedade Açoreana de Estudos Aéreos, the forerunner of SATA.

This process was initially challenging, starting in 1947 with SATA’s first commercial airline operation – a small Beechcraft that connected the islands of São Miguel and Santa Maria in half an hour. The Azores had its airline: now the oldest to continuously operate in the country.

This image shows an Azores Airlines aircraft soaring above the clouds against a bright blue sky. The plane features a sleek white fuselage with blue branding, including the airline's name and logo on the tail fin. The text "Magical" is partially visible on the side of the aircraft, emphasizing the travel experience.

In 1968, SATA started to fly with stewardesses. With over eighty years of experience in passenger and cargo transport, the SATA Group is committed to expanding and taking the authenticity of the Azorean soul to new horizons. Flying in the present with an eye on the future, SATA’s values include quality, professionalism, sustainability and hospitality.

SATA has its roots in the depth of the Azorean soul and is committed to combating the archipelago’s isolation. The colors that accompany SATA’s image resemble those of the Azorean sky and sea. The company's symbol, composed of nine parts, symbolizes the union of the nine islands of the Portuguese archipelago.

The company’s mission is to develop sustainable connectivity in the Azores, and its goal is to be known globally as the best option for travel to and within the beautiful, green paradise that is the Azores archipelago.

Nowadays, three distinct companies, all sharing the same values, comprise the SATA Group. SATA Air Açores ensures air connections between the nine islands of the Azores; Azores Airlines - connects the Azores to Europe, Africa, and North America; and SATA Gestão de Aeródromos manages and maintain four of the nine regional airports in the Azores.
