From vision to action: Nonprofits' contributions to global sustainability
In the narrative of global sustainability, a story often left untold is that of nonprofit organizations, whose formation is driven by a profound commitment to social well-being and innovation rather than profit.
Amidst the relentless pursuit of economic growth, nonprofit organizations (NPOs) have emerged as beacons of hope, dedicating their efforts to addressing some of the planet's most pressing challenges. From combating climate change and ensuring food security to improving access to quality healthcare, the work of NPOs is pivotal in shaping a sustainable future.
The impact of these organizations is monumental and far-reaching. According to the United Nations, over the last two decades, NPOs have played a crucial role in providing clean water access to more than 2.1 billion people and reducing global hunger by 28% since 2000. Moreover, these entities have been instrumental in the adoption of renewable energy projects, enhancing energy access for over 13 million individuals globally since 2010. These statistics underscore the significant role NPOs play in driving forward the global sustainability agenda.
Amidst this backdrop, the Zayed Sustainability Prize emerges as a vital platform, recognizing and supporting the innovative work of these organizations across its Health, Food, Energy, Water and Climate Action categories. By highlighting the achievements of NPOs, the Prize amplifies their efforts, encouraging further innovation and collaboration in the pursuit of a sustainable world.
The inspiring story of the 2020 Zayed Sustainability Prize winner, Electriciens sans frontières, serves as a testament to the profound impact NPOs have on empowering communities. With an impressive portfolio of approximately 100 projects annually across 40 countries, Electriciens sans frontières's commitment to electrifying schools and water-pumping stations transcends mere energy provision. It showcases the transformative potential of energy access in catalyzing community resilience, enhancing educational opportunities and unlocking economic possibilities.
In 2021, the WHO identified climate change as the most significant health challenge of the century, emphasizing the severe risk it poses to global health. Yet, half of the world's population remains without access to essential health services, highlighting an urgent need for comprehensive healthcare solutions. WHO’s Health and Energy Platform of Action (HEPA) underscores this crisis, revealing that nearly one billion people rely on health facilities that lack dependable electricity, critically affecting the quality and accessibility of healthcare.
In this context, SELCO Foundation, a 2018 Zayed Sustainability Prize winner, exemplifies how innovation can bridge the gap between clean energy and healthcare. By deploying solar power systems across underserved Indian communities, SELCO foundation electrifies homes and healthcare facilities, showcasing how environmental sustainability can coexist and advance alongside economic development.
According to the World Food Program, 345 million people experienced food insecurity in 2022, an increase from 282 million the previous year. Malnutrition affects one in three people, including more than 150 million children.
Addressing this critical challenge, Sanku, a 2019 Prize winner, is making strides in combating the silent epidemic of malnutrition with its pioneering fortification approach. By enabling small-scale flour mills in Africa to fortify their products with essential nutrients, Sanku is directly contributing to healthier diets for East African communities, significantly improving nutritional outcomes and advancing the health of future generations.
By mobilizing investors and business leadership, 2013 winner Ceres has become a driving force in advocating for a sustainable global economy. Their research, cutting-edge reports and tools inspire leaders to act on global challenges. Ceres’ efforts include moving capital, influencing systems and strengthening policy to drive large-scale economic transformation.
The Zayed Sustainability Prize, inspired by the vision of the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, has recognized 17 NPOs thus far, underscoring their critical role in driving sustainability and humanitarian work globally. Considering these inspiring endeavors, nonprofits are strongly encouraged to apply for the Prize to become part of a legacy of winners that have positively impacted millions.
