Why traditional firewalls can’t secure the AI enterprise

Since its creation by Check Point founder Gil Shwed in the 1990s, the modern network firewall has been one of the most important control points in enterprise security.

It has helped security leaders enforce policy, inspect traffic, segment environments and prevent threats. The rules that governed modern firewalls – as well as many cybersecurity tools and infrastructure – have evolved iteratively for much of the past 20 years.   

But AI has changed the security playing field – and with it, many of our assumptions about how to detect and prevent advanced cyber-threats from compromising our defenses.   

Employees no longer simply connect to applications. They send prompts to generative AI tools, upload files into models and use AI assistants to accelerate daily work. Developers are embedding AI capabilities directly into business applications. Autonomous agents are beginning to retrieve information, interact with services, call APIs and execute tasks on behalf of users and workflows.  

The rules of cyber-security are changing in real-time. We need to match the speed, sophistication, and intent-driven actions of malicious, offensive AI to internal AI use in order to fully secure organizations from today’s AI threats – and those to come.  

An AI firewall to protect the AI enterprise  

To meet the moment, Check Point is introducing the industry's first AI Network Firewall. For many organizations, this news could not have come at a better time. Check Point Research has released its second annual AI Security Report, with details on malicious AI-driven campaigns globally. At the same time, many organizations are deploying AI faster than governance, visibility and security controls can keep up with. Our researchers found that high-risk AI interactions have doubled over the past year, while the average organization now runs roughly ten AI applications every month.  

Understanding intent and administering control  

Conventional firewalls fail because they focus on basic questions that no longer hold true at AI scale. Most existing firewalls examine where traffic is going, what protocol is being used and whether a connection should be allowed.  

But AI introduces a different set of questions: What is the user asking the model to do? What data is being shared? Is an agent operating within approved boundaries? Is a model call legitimate, or is it part of an attempted prompt injection, data exfiltration or API abuse scenario? 

These questions cannot be answered by looking only at packets, ports or destinations. They require security systems to understand the intent behind AI interactions.  

The network is becoming one of the most critical control points for AI security. AI activity may appear in many forms, from prompts, file uploads or model calls to agent-to-agent requests, MCP server interactions or API-driven workflows. All of this activity traverses the enterprise network, giving security teams a central vantage point to detect, inspect, control and audit AI usage in real time.  

As AI has exploded, the cyber-industry has responded by telling organizations they need to secure AI. But the real challenge is securing AI where it actually operates: across users, applications, agents, clouds, branches, data centers and hybrid environments. AI is not confined to one platform or one application. It is becoming embedded across the enterprise.  

AI security should therefore not live in a separate console, detached from the infrastructure organizations already use to protect their business. AI security must be built into the enforcement points that already sit in the path of enterprise traffic: the firewall.

Organizations want their employees to use AI productively. They want developers to build AI-enabled applications. They want agents to automate repetitive processes and improve business velocity. But they also need governance, data protection and prevention-first security.
