The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals advocates “a blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future”, it is no longer a battle led only by governments or non-government organizations, but also by responsible businesses., Businesses across various industries have been actively reshaping the trend to navigate the world to a sustainable and responsible future.
Teva is one of the pacesetters in the pharmaceutical industry, which has a long history of operation and a wide range of reach. It provides medicines to nearly 200 million patients across over 60 countries every day. Teva has dedicated itself to providing accessible medicines for patients for over 120 years and has taken on the pledge of being a responsible business.
Showcasing Teva's environmental leadership is its state-of-the-art facility in Ulm, Germany. Amalia Adler-Waxman, Senior VP Global Head ESG at Teva says, “we have a very strong commitment to ensuring that we manage and reduce our impact on the environment. This really comes to life in all elements of the operations here in Ulm.”
Teva Germany is the first pharmaceutical manufacturer in Germany with EMAS certification. In 2019, Teva Germany installed a photovoltaic system consisting of 3,580 solar panels to power the production processes as well as reusing or recycle 95% of waste. On top of manufacturing, carbon emissions from distribution and transportation are also major contributors to the climate. “We are using satellite-based cruise control to reduce the fuel consumption of the trucks,” Robert Renz, Fleet Manager Ulm at Teva elaborates.
Furthermore, the company has long been committed to addressing the needs of vulnerable populations who lack access to quality healthcare and medicine. In 2021, Teva donated 307 million units of medicines worth $487 million to patients in need. For instance, Teva has been working with Global Hope an NGO aiming to provide medication for pediatric cancer in Malawi, Africa, since 2016 and effectively improve their medical access through three ways:
- Regular supplements of medicines, reducing drugs shortage
- Providing high-quality medicines
- Offering affordable and even free medication
Dr. Maz Ozuah, Medical Director at Global Hope Malawi explains, “prior to the partnership with Teva, we were very frequently brought into drug stock-outs. But since Teva has been supporting us with most of the chemotherapy drugs. We have had a regular supply of these medications and the impact of that is that we have been able to treat our patients.”
Teva’s reputation of being a responsible business and delivering quality medicines with integrity and ethical business practices speaks loud for itself. With 53 manufacturing sites worldwide and hundreds of generic medicine approvals globally, Teva is reaching more patients in more regions every day.
Teva will keep carrying the torch of being a global leader in generics and biopharmaceuticals, improving the lives of patients across the world, as well as leading a responsible business by protecting the environment, improving sustainability across the supply chain, ensuring patient safety and engaging and supporting its people.
