Within the past 40 years, approximately 1 billion hectares of forest have been felled, equivalent to an area the size of Europe. Studies show that some 15 billion trees are cut down each year, and the global tree population has decreased by 46% since the dawn of civilization.
The growth and expansion of civilization has been accompanied by major disruptions of biodiversity and the destruction of natural habitats. At present, one million species are at risk of extinction.
Nature is declining at a dangerous rate and is now at its most vulnerable. Climate change and environmental sustainability have become global issues of paramount importance.
“Trees are extraordinary. We depend completely on their capacity to protect us. There’s no protection in the world against climate change, other than forests and their biodiversity.”
– Alan Bolt Director, Centre for an Understanding with Nature
Calibre Mining Corp., a gold exploration and mining company, acknowledges the fine line between the preservation and restoration of nature and the demands of modern civilization, and how both are attainable through a delicate but dedicated approach.
The company is committed to delivering sustainable value for local communities and shareholders through responsible operations and disciplined growth, while contributing to global efforts to safeguard the future of our planet.
The Highest Environmental Standards in the Mining Sector
Environmental protection and sustainability are a priority across all levels of Calibre’s mining operations. The company actively identifies and eliminates or mitigates all critical risks to the environment and biodiversity associated with its activities.
Water source protection is of particular interest to the company. Calibre invests in modern technologies and cutting-edge engineering to ensure water sources are protected and often actively improved by the company’s presence.
After mining operations cease in an area, Calibre continues to monitor water sources during a three- to five-year reclamation period, during which activities are carried out to ensure biodiversity, environmental rehabilitation and sustainability.
Sustainable Mining
In June 2022, Calibre received the key environmental permit for development and production of the Pavon Central open-pit mine from the Nicaraguan Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, having worked closely with environmental consultants and the Centre for an Understanding with Nature (CEN) in Nicaragua to develop quality project engineering with minimal impact to the environment.
In areas around its Pavon operations, the company is implementing socio-environmental initiatives focused on water conservation and sustainable forestry, as well as projects to strengthen community resilience, promoting women's entrepreneurship and healthier homes with smokeless stoves and access to clean water.
In collaboration with CEN and other strategic partners, Calibre has planted more than one million trees in Nicaragua, restored more than 200 hectares of forest, and protected more than 2.2 million bees, essential to restoring local ecosystems and biodiversity.
Convinced that environmental and social performance are fundamental to the company’s success, Calibre Mining Corp. is committed to becoming a leader among its peers in matters of sustainability.
