Today, approximately 5.8 billion disposable cups are wasted every year in Germany alone. That equates to almost 16 million cups a day, 660,000 an hour and around 512,000 every hour. Waste is produced across the entire production line, from cut down trees to water and energy waste.

Paper cups are commonly considered an eco-friendly alternative, however, due to a large percent of paper cups being internally lined with thin plastic seals to avoid leakage, they become unrecyclable and ultimately end up in landfills.

Generic paper cups can take up to 20 years to decompose in a landfill, throughout which the paper cups release Methane, a gas more harmful than CO2, the biggest contributor to the current global climate crisis.

RECUP is one of the companies revolutionizing the packaging market to completely replace single-use plastics with reusable alternatives that are also sustainably manufactured and recyclable.

“We believe that it is in our hands and our generation to tackle the climate crisis and bring change to our economy, to our people, and to our consumption.”

- Florian Pachaly, Founder & Executive Partner at RECUP

The Transition to a Sustainable Reusable System

Disposable beverage cups and food boxes create approximately 190,000 tons of waste every year. RECUP is actively eliminating disposable packaging in the consumable to-go market through their range of sustainably made, reusable cups and bowls, saving businesses and consumers money and reducing global waste.

One RECUP can replace up to 1,000 disposable cups, this helps reduce landfill and curbside waste as their cups are designed to be reusable for long periods of time, after which they can be 100% recycled. This keeps consumer costs low and reduces CO2 emissions. Over 13.000 restaurants are already part of the largest reusable system in Germany.

“At the moment if you look at our economy, it’s a linear system without any ending, without any boundaries. We have to accept that these boundaries exist, and then we can build a circular economy where we close the loop and have circular products that last very long and can be recycled in the end.”

- Florian Pachaly, Founder & Executive Partner at RECUP

Additionally RECUP has developed a sustainable range of reusable and recyclable bowls suitable for take away foods and easy to use for both customers and businesses. Every REBOWL can replace up to 500 disposable packages, reducing cost and waste through a range of designs and sizes suitable for consumers’ needs.

The Future of Reusable Packaging

From 2023, restaurants in Germany will be obligated to offer their customers reusable alternatives for to-go and take-away packaging, in line with the United Nations Climate Crisis roadmap for a sustainable future.

RECUP is making exceptional strides in the reusable and recyclable packaging market, reducing cost and waste. The company is dedicated to expanding their reach by being a role model and offering easy and convenient solutions for a more sustainable way of packaging for more consumers and businesses around the world.
