More than 800 people couldn't wait to be one of the first to get their hands on the new iPad - standing in a line that wrapped around a city block in front of Apple's New York flagship store. A line that began in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. But the wait is over. Apple opened its doors late Friday - giving consumers their first chance to touch the iPad 2. SOUNDBITE: WALTER FRASER, IPAD 2 BUYER (ENGLISH) SAYING: "I've always heard about the iPad and I never had one so when I saw the demonstration for the iPad 2 I got a little excited, and so I said: I must have one." SOUNDBITE: MOISES LIMA, IPAD 2 BUYER, TRAVELER FROM BRAZIL (ENGLISH) SAYING: "First of all it's a lot lighter. And a lot thinner. The cameras are a great sell for me." SOUNDBITE: CRYSTAL JOHNSON, IPAD 2 BUYER (ENGLISH) SAYING: "I didn't want to wait for it to come in the mail. I knew it was going to take longer in the mail. I need it for school. It is easier to type down my psychology notes and everything. And it's lighter than having my Mac Book Pro." The throngs of shoppers eager to pluck down hundreds of dollars for the iPad 2 suggests demand is holding up despite the onslaught of competitors introduced since the original device launched last year. 15 million of the first version were sold in a matter of months and some analysts predict 1 million iPad 2s could fly off the shelves this opening weekend. This family interrupted their vacation from France so they could buy the device. SOUNDBITE: JEAN MARC DUCLOUS, IPAD 2 BUYER, VISITING FROM FRANCE (ENGLISH) SAYING: "It's two or three months - I want - but I know on the Internet there would be a new iPad, so I wait for." A wait his friends back home and in other countries will have to endure - the iPad 2 goes on sale internationally March 25th. Conway Gittens, Reuters
