The barks of a happy -- and extraordinarily lucky -- dog. She is reunited here for the first time with her owner -- after being swept out to sea by receding tsunami waves on March 11. The canine survived for weeks on the roof of a house swept away by the wall of water until the Japanese Coast Guard found her by chance. The 2-year-old dog evaded capture for several hours as she scrambled over the large floating rubble raft. But rescuers eventually pulled her to safety. The dog's owner said she saw the news of the rescue on television, and recognized her pet by the brown collar she was wearing. (SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) BAN'S OWNER, SAYING: "I saw her on NHK news and I immediately knew it was our dog." "I am so glad she was rescued." The dog, who the owner said is named Ban, was initially taken to a local animal shelter after being rescued. She was found on the first day of a joint operation by U.S. and Japanese forces to locate bodies of the some 15,000 people who are still missing -- drawing unexpected smiles on a grim mission.
