China floods evacuate thousands

July 7 - Heavy rain and flooding continue to wreak havoc in China's south-western Sichuan Province, killing eight people and forcing 170,000 more to evacuate, state media reports. Sophia Soo reports.

Even pigs being led to safety on leashes have become a common sight in China's Sichuan province as rain continues to pour. Flash floods have killed at least eight people. And six more are missing. About 170,000 have fled their homes in southwest China. Heavy rains since July 2 have submerged more than 50,000 hectares of farmland and affected 1.5 million people. Mudslides have destroyed bridges and roads. Local news agency Xinhua reported the estimated loss to be 77 million U.S. dollars. Weather forecasts say rainstorms will continue through Thursday.
