Libyan rebels control Abu Salim

Aug. 26 - Residents in Tripoli's Abu Salim district cheer on the rebels following their takeover of the area, once a Gaddafi stronghold. Sunita Rappai reports.

The rebels took over the town - one of the main holdouts of forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi - after heavy fighting and a NATO airstrike on Thursday. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) UNIDENTIFIED RESIDENT SAYING: "I congratulate all of our brothers all over the country of this great victory. And tell them that Libya has been liberated by God's will and by the efforts of the rebels. We also ask for mercy for our martyrs who sacrificed their souls in order for this moment to come." Residents are now beginning the task of clearing up their neighbourhood - including removing the dead. Meanwhile wounded suspected Gaddafi mercenaries are carried out of this damaged fire station. Libyan rebels say they are sending in special forces units in their hunt for the missing Libyan leader, whose supporters are now pinned down in pockets of resistance in the capital.
