ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Palestinians infuriated at a kidnap and killing they blame on far-right Jews clashed with Israeli police in Jerusalem on Friday (July 4) after the funeral of the youth. "Intifada! Intifada!" chanted the mourners as they carried the Palestinian flag-wrapped body of Mohammed Abu Khudair, 16, through a funeral march in the streets of his neighbourhood of Shuafat under a sweltering summer sun. With tensions further inflamed by Israeli restrictions on Muslim access to the city's al Aqsa mosque complex during the Ramadan fasting month, protesters threw stones at police, who drove them back with stun grenades and tear gas. Medics said 15 demonstrators were treated for injuries. There was no immediate word of arrests by the Israelis. Abu Khudair was bundled into a car on Wednesday (July 2), witnesses said, and his charred body located in a Jerusalem forest. Many Palestinians, including President Mahmoud Abbas, assert he was the victim of far-right Jews incensed at the discovery this week of the remains of three Israeli teenagers who were abducted in the occupied West Bank on June 12. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Abu Khudair's killing "loathsome" and ordered a swift police investigation. Israeli authorities said they did not yet know whether the Palestinian was indeed the victim of a hate crime. Ahead of the funeral, Israeli police deployed extra forces in Jerusalem and barred men under the age of 50 from al Aqsa. The police presence was already heavy throughout the city this week, to control anti-Arab marches by Israeli ultranationalist and stone-throwing protests by Palestinians. The disappearance of the three Israeli teenagers triggered army sweeps of the occupied West Bank.
