The musical "Fun Home," based off a lesbian memoir, is off to Broadway after its critically acclaimed off-Broadway run. The cast, including Tony Award winner and star Michael Cerveris and co-star Beth Malone hit the Circle in the Square Theatre in New York City in advance of the play's Broadway debut. SOUNDBITE: Michael Cerveris, Tony Award winner and "Fun Home" star, saying (English): "The thing that I found most heartening was audience members after the show downtown, nine times out of 10 would come up and say, you know my family was nothing like this but my family was exactly like this. The best fact about where we are as a country and as a society now is that people who previously were not even able to consider people with alternate lifestyles or people who are outside of the mainstream as full human beings just like everybody else." A finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, Alison Bechdel's 2006 bestseller recalls growing up a lesbian with a closeted gay father in rural Pennsylvania. Malone plays the adult Alison in the play. SOUNDBITE: Beth Malone, "Fun Home" co-star, saying (English): "We tell this story of the detrimental cost of shame and that is ultimately what this is about, you know, and the redemption that comes from forgiveness and also living in truth, so it's a very intense little sandwich." "Fun Home" begins previews March 27 and officially opens on Broadway on April 19.
