What a difference 24 hours makes, and not in a good way for the British entertainment industry...which took two major hits... First on Wednesday (March 25) there was news that the hugely popular British-Irish band, "One Direction" was splitting up after Zayn Malik called it quits. That was followed up with the bad news that the British period drama "Downton Abbey" will end after its sixth season. The show's executive producer Gareth Neame made the announcement on Thursday (March 26) during a media conference call, telling reporters that "it's good to quit while you're ahead." The iconic series highlighted the "upstairs-downstairs" class divisions of early 20th century Britain and the impact of social change and world events in plots filled with human drama. During an earlier interview, Writer and creator Julian Fellowes called the show a fertile canvas for good television. SOUNDBITE Julian Fellowes Downton Abbey, writer and creator, saying (English): "And I love the fact that the young ones have had, so many of them have had cracks at you know not just movies but plays in the West End and other stuff on television and everything else. I think it's great. So, you know I'm delighted. Now it looks as if Dan (Stevens) is taking off with his new film "The Guest". He's had very very good notices for that and they're all talking about the next James Bond. So you know, Downton's where you want to go to get a career off on the right foot." "Downton Abbey" has become one of the biggest international hits ever for British television, watched from China and Sweden to Russia and South Korea, with viewership in America surpassing all expectations and setting records for U.S. public service broadcaster PBS.
