ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION STORY: He's been hiding for the last year, which made zookeepers at Russia's Yaroslavl zoo suspect this was one special kangaroo. And indeed he is. After finally leaping into the world from his momma's pouch, it's easy to see that this joey is an albino, which Russian zoo keepers say only happens in one-in-1,000 kangaroos. The newest addition to the zoo peaked interest earlier this year, when zoo keepers noticed that the little face peaking out of its mother's pouch had light fur and red eyes. Albinism is a hereditary condition that is caused by a lack of coloring pigments in the skin. In animals it can lead to a lack of pigmentation in the eyes, fur, scales or feathers. Zoo keepers say the baby, from the Bennett's Tree kangaroo species, would struggle to survive outside the zoo, because its albinism would make it more susceptible to sunburn - and more likely to catch the eye of other animals. The baby kangaroo weighs a healthy four kilograms. For now both mother and baby are being kept together at an enclosure that is separate from the father. Zoo keepers say they are taking precautions to ensure the larger male kangaroo, named 'Raisin', does not hurt the baby, adding he is a "jealous papa".
