The decision by British tabloid, the Sun, to publish this image has earned the wrath of Buckingham Palace. The images, taken from a grainy black-and-white film, appears to show Britain Queen Elizabeth performing a Nazi salute as a seven year old in 1933- the same year Hitler came to power in Germany. Also seen is the future king Edward VIII purportedly teaching his nieces Elizabeth and her younger sister Princess Margaret how to perform the salute. The Buckingham Palace slammed the Sun for publishing the image, but the tabloid's managing editor Stig Abell said the newspaper had acted responsibly and placed the picture in historical context. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MANAGING EDITOR OF THE SUN NEWSPAPER, STIG ABELL, SAYING "It's a fascinating image. Not least because it has Edward VIII who went on to be king in 1936. And in 1937 he ended up in Germany. And in 1940 there was a plot, in Germany, to put him back onto the British throne. And he ended his life in 1970 saying Hitler wasn't a bad chap in the Second World War, was the responsibility of the Jews and the Reds, and he was at the heart of the British establishment. So I think this is an important public interest story. I don't think exploitative. I do think it's of genuine national and historical interest, and we took some time and trouble to place it in an appropriate historical context I feel." Outside the palace, tourists seemed less perturbed about the picture. (SOUNDBITE) (English) RESIDENT FROM FROM KIDDERMINSTER, UNITED KINGDOM, SUE, SAYING: "You know it was private. It was something that we've all done things that perhaps we shouldn't have done. Yes she grew up to be Queen but it's a big to do over nothing really." (SOUNDBITE) (English) TOURIST FROM TENNESSEE, JENNIFER, 17 YEARS OLD, SAYING: "I think it happened 80 years ago and it needs to be let go. So, she was a little kid." There is no word who shot the movie and from whom the Sun obtained a copy. Eighty two years after that picture - Elizabeth, now age 89, gets set to overtake Queen Victoria as Britain's longest-reining monarch in September.
