Sewage spill closes popular Hawaii beach

Heavy rains drench Hawaii, and sewage spill shuts down parts of Honolulu's Waikiki beach. Sean Carberry reports.

STORY: You've saved up all year for your Hawaiian vacation, only to hear this from the lifeguard at Waikiki beach. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED LIFEGUARD, SAYING: "The beach is closed due to a sewer spill not too far from here." Tropical depression Kilo breezed past Hawaii dumping heavy rains and overwhelming sewage systems. Officials have yet to determine whether the spill near Waikiki is hazardous. Shayne Enright with the Honolulu Emergency Services Department says people should stay out of the water for a couple of days until test results are in. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SHAYNE ENRIGHT, HONOLULU EMERGENCY SERVICES DEPARTMENT, SAYING: "Don't take the risk. We don't know what's in the water, you could get a serious infection get extremely sick or even worse." Some beachgoers don't need to be told twice. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED BEACHGOER, SAYING: "Well, I was coming down to have a swim but I think I might pass now, it doesn't seem like paradise when you think there could be nasties floating in it." But, others aren't fazed by possible nasties. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED BEACHGOER, SAYING: "That's a lot of water there, I don't think a little particle is gonna hurt me. Even if they don't let me, I'm still going in." Tropical Depression Twelve-E in the eastern Pacific could dump more rain on Hawaii next week.
