Panama burns over 11 tons of illegal drugs

Panamanian authorities burn more than 11 tons of seized illicit drugs seized from various anti-narcotics operations from across the country. Nathan Frandino reports.

One brick at a time, more than 11 tons of drugs are being destroyed in Panama. The drugs were offloaded in Cerro Patacon on Friday, following two months of anti-drug operations. Maria Cecilia Mata is the commissioner of Panama's Direction of Judicial Investigation of the National Police. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) COMMISSIONER FROM THE PANAMANIAN DIRECTION OF JUDICIAL INVESTIGATION OF THE NATIONAL POLICE, MARIA CECILIA MATA, SAYING: "The seizure was carried out by the national border police, the national air-sea service, police information director on the coast and in different areas of the country." After hosing down the marijuana and cocaine with lighter fluid, authorities then set the narcotics on fire. Central America and Mexico are major transit points for cocaine to get to the U.S., though officials warn any drugs caught here will only go up in smoke.
