Russia's Bolshoi Theater presented a new director for its world-famous ballet troupe, a position it said it was creating after its outgoing artistic director was nearly blinded in a 2013 acid attack. Makhar Vaziev will lead the world-famous troupe. Vaziev is the current head of Italy's La Scala opera house. He addressed the media, saying he was accepting the offer made by the Bolshoi's director general. SOUNDBITE: Makhar Vaziev saying (Russian): "I would repeat once again that we have not discussed it (the appointment) for a lengthy period of time and I have come to the conclusion that I accept the offer made by Vladimir Georgievich (Urin). I really hope that we will be able to do a good job and to help the theatre and its ballet. In any case I would really like for it to happen." His appointment comes as part of a restructuring that fans of the renowned institution hope will restore its scandal-tainted reputation; two years ago the Bolshoi's artistic director was attacked with acid, lifting the lid on poisonous rivalries over roles, money and power at one of Russia's most prominent cultural institutions.
