This 1,465-pound pumpkin took some six months to grow. But after competing at a large pumpkin contest, it all came crashing down for the man who created it. Minnesota's Charlie Bernstrom decided the pumpkin should spread its seeds... literally. SOUNDBITE: CHARLIE BERNSTORM, SAYING: "Kind of a good ending to the season when you can have a lot of people come out and enjoy watching a pumpkin smash a van I guess." SOT Boy: "I think it's pretty cool, I like destructive stuff." And so the pumpkin was raised high into the air. SOT Woman: "It's a dollar for a ticket for a chance to pull the chord to drop the pumpkin." While money was raised for a local Literacy Council. SOT Bernstrom: "We made it so it was going to be hard to come down so the wind wouldn't release the trigger, but when we were pulling there for a little bit it was like geez I hope it comes down now." (DROPS!) Right on target! SOT Boy: "It like snapped in half, I saw like dust." Bernstrom said it was hard to see the fate of his beloved pumpkin... even more so than this van... but says it was worth it and is now looking forward to next year. AND the next big pumpkin.
