Afghan forces kill insurgents, ending siege

Afghan forces have killed a group of insurgents holed up in a house near the Indian consulate, ending a 24-hour siege. Yiming Woo reports.

Afghan special forces fire at insurgents in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif. Three militants shut themselves into this house after they attacked the Indian consulate nearby. After 24 hours, the siege ended. (SOUNDBITE) (Dari) POLICE CHIEF OF BALKH PROVINCE, SAYED KAMAL SADAT, SAYING: "All attackers were killed and they have left behind light and heavy weapons they were using during the attack." Police say they're investigating the identities of the insurgents. The provincial governor has blamed "enemies of peace and stability" for the attack. Insurgents who attacked an Indian air base in Pathankot are still battling forces there. The spate of violence comes as Afghanistan tries to repair ties with India and Pakistan, and restart peace talks with the Taliban.
