ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: The global head of an international church that caters to gay communities around the world on Sunday (June 12) called a shooting massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida a hate crime against the gay and lesbian community. "Our community has experienced violence and oppression before but this is of such a scale that we cant take it in yet," said the Reverend Nancy Wilson, the Global Leader of the Metropolitan Community Churches. Fifty-three people were wounded in the rampage. It was the deadliest single U.S. mass shooting incident, eclipsing the 2007 massacre of 32 people at Virginia Tech University. Police identified the shooter as Omar S. Mateen, a Florida resident who a senior FBI official said might have had leanings towards Islamic State militants. Officials called the rampage a "terrorism incident," but cautioned that the suspected Islamist connection required further investigation. A man was arrested in California with assault weapons and possible explosives on Sunday and told authorities he was in the Los Angeles area for the gay pride festival, the Los Angeles Times reported.
