NATURAL ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) A capsule selection of works by artist Jean-Michel Basquiat from the collection of actor Johnny Depp are to be auctioned at Christie's in London. The group of eight works by the artist have been assembled over the course of more than 25 years and date, almost exclusively, from 1981. The works illustrate the post-punk New York scene of that era and give insight into a key period in Basquiat's career. The sale is timely with the Untitled (1982) Basquiat breaking the auction record at Christie's New York when it sold for $57.3m in May 2016. One of Depp's Basquiat paintings, which is titled Pork (1981), has a presale estimate of £2,500,000-3,500,000 ($3,600,000-5,000,000). The works are brought together with a selection of international names including Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol and Lucian Freud as part of this season's Post-War and Contemporary Art Auctions on 29 and 30 June. The collection of art is estimated to to fetch a combined total £90,000,000 ($129,726,000) across all auctions.
