Elation in Syria's Manbij after Islamic State's ouster from city

Residents celebrate after U.S.-backed forces seize full control of the northern Syrian city of Manbij from Islamic State, as anti-IS fighters sweep the city and as the U.S. prepares for the next even tougher battle ahead. Mana Rabiee reports.

Elation in Manbij -- one day after U.S.-backed forces seized full control of the city from Islamic State. The last remaining IS fighters here were using civilians as human shields. Some 2,000 people, held hostage by the militants, have been freed. The ordeal, still weighing on many. Manbij was fought largely fought by these men. The Syria Democratic Forces or SDF, which includes some women and is an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN, SAYING: "May God salute you! You are our children, you are our heroes, you are the blood of our hearts, you are our eyes. Go out Islamic State!" Helping the SDF -- U.S. special forces, which played a critical role on the ground. It was, in fact, the most ambitious advance in Syria by a group allied to Washington, since the U.S. first launched its military campaign against IS two years ago. The SDF are now sweeping the city. U.S. officials say once the Manbij operation is complete, conditions will be right to move on to Islamic State's de facto capital, Raqqa. Washington expects a tough battle ahead.
