Palestinian militants in Gaza launched a rocket into Israel on Sunday, and Israel bombed the Gaza town of Beit Hanoun in retaliation. There were no injuries when the rocket landed in a residential area in the town of Sderot. Israel said aircraft and tanks hit targets belonging to Hamas militants in response. An Israeli shell damaged a water town in Beit Hanoun. Hamas controls the Gaza Strip and has observed a de-facto ceasefire with Israel since a 2014 war. During that war, militants fired thousands of rockets and mortars into Israel killing 73 Israelis and Israeli attacks killed more than 2,100 Palestinians, mostly civilians. While Hamas has largely observed the ceasefire, smaller militant groups have defied the agreement and occasionally launch rockets at Israel.
