The fire broke out shortly after midnight, in the shanty town of Cantagallo in Lima. Witnesses say the flames spread quickly, tearing through dozens of homes. By the time firefighters were able to bring it under control two hours later, 300 houses had been destroyed, and 500 families were left homeless. The cause is under investigation, but it's believed the blaze may have been triggered by the flame from a candle. While no fatalities were reported, residents say they've lost everything.
