A large crowd of customers had gathered outside a bank in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state. They were trying to force their way inside when police holding batons charged into the crowd. Local officials say one officer has now been suspended from duty, and another has been transferred. Crowds have gathered at banks across India to exchange their 500 rupee and 1000 rupee notes since the government abolished the bills earlier this month. Opposition lawmakers staged a protest outside the Parliament building in New Delhi. One lawmaker accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of conducting an impromptu financial experiment. Modi announced the withdrawal of high denomination notes as part of a massive crackdown on tax evasion, corruption and forgery. But the move has left many Indians struggling to pay for basic goods like food and fuel. Holders of large notes have until December 30th to exchange them for new, smaller notes.
