ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: A total of 473 migrants were rescued from five boats in the Mediterranean on Tuesday (December 6), the Italian coast guard said, releasing footage of one of the rescue operations. During the operations officers also found the body of a dead migrant, the coast guard said in a statement. The migrants were rescued from four rubber boats and one small vessel, the coast guard said. The footage released by the coast guard showed rescuers telling the migrants they came from Italy and would help them and the migrants smiling and doing the thumbs up sign. As of Dec. 1, Italy had taken in more than 173,000 boat migrants this year, beating the previous record of 170,000 set in 2014. In all, about a half million have come in the past three years. Italy has borne the brunt of new arrivals since the implementation in March of an agreement between the European Union and Turkey to curb the flow of migrants sailing for Greece. The influx is putting the country's asylum process and legal system under increasing pressure.
