ROUGH CUT - NATURAL (NO REPORTER NARRATION) More than 50 people gathered on Wednesday (December 21) in front of the memorial church where a truck attack killed 12 people on Monday to sing hand in hand and demand unity. The 25-ton truck smashed into wooden huts selling Christmas gifts and serving mulled wine and sausages, injuring about 45 people. Holding banners with messages like "Berliners stay together" or "I am a Berliner", people from different parts of the world gathered with members of church choirs from Berlin to sing famous leads like "We are the World", "Imagine" and "Shine a light" together. Many refugees living in Berlin asylum centers joined. The pre-Christmas carnage at a symbolic Berlin site - under the ruined spire of a church bombed in World War Two - has shocked Germans and prompted security reviews across Europe, already on high alert after attacks this year in Belgium and France. The possible - though unproven - involvement of a migrant or refugee has revived a bitter debate about security and immigration, with Chancellor Angela Merkel facing calls to clamp down after allowing more than a million newcomers into Germany in the past two years.
