Wednesday, February 08, 2017 - 01:48

''When you look at the U.S. code and how clear it's written in the authority and power it gives the president to do what's necessary to keep this country safe and regulate who comes into this country, I think it's a very very clear reading... I don't think you could misread this,'' said White House spokesman Sean Spicer. Rough Cut (no reporter narration).

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: White House spokesman Sean Spicer said U.S. code gives President Donald Trump the "authority and power... to do what's necessary to keep this country safe", deflecting a question on what Trump meant when he said the court process over his travel ban was "disgraceful." "Was the president this morning talking about the merits of the order when he called it 'disgraceful'? The hearing that he heard last night?" asked a reporter. "When you look at the U.S. code and how clear it's written in the authority and power it gives the president to do what's necessary to keep this country safe and regulate who comes into this country, I think it's a very very clear reading... I don't think you could misread this," said Spicer. Trump stepped up his criticism of the U.S. judiciary on Wednesday, saying courts seem to be "so political," a day after his U.S. travel ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries faced close scrutiny from an appeals court. A three-judge panel of the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday heard arguments on the Trump administration's challenge to a lower court order putting his temporary travel ban on hold. Trump on Saturday accused the judge who issued the order of opening the United States to "potential terrorists."
