Philippine law enforcers arrest Duterte critic on drug charges

Senator and renowned critic of President Rodrigo Duterte, Leila de Lima, is arrested at her office for drug-related charges and vows to keep on fighting. Samantha Vadas reports.

Duterte's drug war going after one of its biggest critics. Filipino Senator Leila de Lima escorted from her office on Friday (February 24). The staunch opponent of the president facing arrest for drug-related charges. (SOUNDBITE) (Filipino) PHILIPPINE SENATOR, LEILA DE LIMA, SAYING: "The truth will be out in time. If they think they can silence me, if they think I can no longer fight for what I'm fighting for, especially finding the truth behind the daily killings, the pressures and tyranny under Duterte's regime, then it is my honour to get arrested because of what I'm fighting for." The former human rights lawyer is accused of receiving money from drug dealers inside the country's prisons. Charges she says are a vendetta against her after leading a senate probe into alleged extrajudicial killings in Duterte's drug war. De Lima was removed from the role by allies of the president just days before coming under investigation herself for her apparent role in the narcotics trade. More than 7000 people have died in Duterte's drug crackdown. De Lima this week describing the President as a "sociopathic serial killer" with a "criminal mind".
