The tallest structure west of the Mississippi is open for business. (SOUNDBITE) (English) KEVIN DE LEÓN, PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE OF THE CALIFORNIA STATE SENATE, SAYING: "This is a historic moment. Not only for the city of Los Angeles, but for the state of California as well." The Wilshire Grand Center rises 73 stories into the Los Angeles skyline. Its 889-room InterContinental hotel and office tower inside measures 1,100 feet, including a spire affixed to the top and programmable LED lights that illuminate the building. (SOUNDBITE) (English) FAYE WASHINGTON, LOS ANGELES RESIDENT, SAYING: "It is going to be the pinnacle of downtown dining, luxury, just hanging out. It's fabulous." It's the first high-rise since 1958 NOT to have a flat roof since the city scrapped the requirement in 2015. South Korean transport giant Hanjin, which owns Korean Air, is the company behind the $1 billion project. The Wilshire Grand Center knocks the U.S. Bank Tower from its top spot as the tallest skyscraper west of the Mississippi, soaring past it by more than 80 feet.
