St. Louis police fired pepper spray Friday night... to disperse a crowd of protesters demanding the city close the Medium Security Institution. The prison, known as "The Workhouse", does not have air conditioned cells and inmates are reportedly living in moldly conditions. With scorching summer temperatures, protesters say that is inhumane. SOT: "I have A/C at my house, and we're still hot. It's torture, pure torture. Do something about it, please, America." Their chants were met with acknowledgement from inmates. Senator Jamilah Nasheed joined the demonstration: (SOUNDBITE) MISSOURI STATE SENATOR, JAMILAH NASHEED SAYING: "Inhumane, it's deplorable and it should not be accepted under any circumstances." But officials say, something is being done: (SOUNDBITE) PRESIDENT OF THE ST. LOUIS BOARD OF ALDERMEN, LEWIS REED, SAYING: "We're dealing with people and we should provide a humane facility." Reed says the city is set to spend thousands of dollars to bring temporary air conditioning to the Workhouse while the city works on a more permanent solution. But with allegations of unsanitary conditions and abuse from guards, many of these protesters are turning up the heat... saying the jail should be shut down forever.
