If you enjoy supping on a pint of beer, a new twist to the recipe could just perk you up. Scientists in Singapore have invented a tipple containing a probiotic bacteria which can boost the immune system and improve gut health. It's also made from the malt, alcohol and hops you'd expect. Food researcher Alcine Chan said it was a struggle to get the formula just right. (SOUNDBITE) (English) FOOD RESEARCHER AND PROBIOTICS BEER INVENTOR, 23-YEAR-OLD ALCINE CHAN, SAYING: "The hops is the main ingredient that kills probiotics so we have to find a way in order for the probiotcs to overcome the hops so this process actually is quite tedious." Chan perfected the beer recipe as part of her senior year project at the National University of Singapore. She chose the drink as a new vehicle for probiotics because she saw the market potential. The still unnamed pale, bubbly beer has 3.5 percent alcohol content and a sweet taste. Chan has stopped short of making health claims about it, but says probiotics have proven health benefits. Bars will have to wait before they can start stocking up as the drink's inventors wait for a patent.
