ROUGH CUT. NO REPORTER NARRATION. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) say they are continuing to push further into Raqqa in their fight against Islamic State, making attempts to recapture a strategic hospital from the militants. Under the banner of the SDF, an alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias are fighting to take Raqqa back from the jihadists, who took control of the Syrian city at the beginning of 2014. With air strikes and special forces from the U.S.-led coalition, the SDF pushed into Raqqa in June 2017 after advancing on the city's outskirts for months. Islamic State militants attacked the U.S.-backed forces east of Raqqa on Friday (July 28), setting off clashes and abducting a number of people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The Observatory said the clashes had resulted in casualties among displaced people and SDF fighters, but gave no further details. The targeted area, al-Karama, hosts a camp for Syrians driven from their homes by the war. A Kurdish official confirmed the report but gave no more details. Islamic State has lost swathes of territory in Syria over the last year to separate campaigns waged by the SDF, the Russian-backed Syrian military, and Turkey-backed Syrian rebels.
