Irish PM calls for "unique solutions" to Brexit

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has called for the European Union and Britain to find ''unique solutions'' to their Brexit logjam, including a bespoke customs union. Ciara Lee reports.

He's a new face on the European stage. but the Irish Prime Minister was more than happy to wade into the Brexit debate during his first visit to Northern Ireland since taking up the post. He's urging the EU and Britain to find "unique solutions" to their logjam, including a bespoke customs union. That would solve the problem of a hard border in Ireland. (SOUNDBITE) (English) IRISH TAOISEACH, LEO VARADKAR, SAYING: "Every single aspect of life in Northern Ireland could be affected by the outcome. Your jobs and your economy, the border, the rights of EU citizens, the rights of cross-border workers, research funding as I mentioned earlier, trade, agriculture, energy, our fisheries, aviation, EU funding, tourism, public services, the list goes on." Dublin is hoping compromise can be reached ahead of a key Brexit summit in October And made several proposals during his speech. (SOUNDBITE) (English) IRISH TAOISEACH, LEO VARADKAR, SAYING: "For example if the United Kingdom doesn't want to stay in the customs union, perhaps there can be a UK-EU customs union instead. After all, the European Union has a customs union with Turkey." British Prime Minister Theresa May has said Britain will leave the EU's customs union when it leaves the bloc in order to pursue its own trade agreements with countries around the world.
