Yazidi boy reunites with mother in Winnipeg

A 12-year-old Yazidi boy was reunited with his mother Thursday morning at the Winnipeg airport, three years after being captured by Islamic State. Colette Luke has more.

(Cheers at airport) 12-year-old Yazidi boy, Imad Mishko Tammo, reunites with his mother Thursday morning at the Winnipeg airport….. their first meeting after his capture by Islamic State three years ago… (SOUNDBITE) NOFA ZAGHLA, IMAD'S MOTHER, SAYING: "I am very happy and very thankful. Thank God that he got here safely and soundly and I can reunite with him…" Imad and the rest of his family were captured by ISIS in northern Iraq in 2014… his mother and her four younger children escaped, but Imad, his father and another brother did not… Part of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's plan to resettle 1200 Yazidi refugees, Imad's mother and four siblings arrived in Winnipeg six months ago…. And just a month ago, pictures taken by Iraqi forces were posted showing Imad had been rescued following a battle in Mosul… Immigration officials acted as quickly as possible to bring Imad to Canada... (SOUNDBITE) IMAD MISHKO TAMMO SAYING: I am happy. I am very thankful for everyone that had any part to do with me reuniting with my mother" But it won't be an easy road for Imad. He is still recovering from bullet wounds…and possibly psychological problems as well. But at least for now, he'll have his mother by his side to help him through …. As they await for news about the rest of their family…
