It was a bloody night for U.S. law enforcement. Separate shootings in Florida and Pennsylvania left one officer dead and six injured on Friday. Two suspects were also killed. In Kissimmee, near Orlando, police say two uniformed officers were taken by surprise after approaching a group of people they suspected of being involved in illegal conduct. Officer Matthew Baxter died of his wounds and Sergeant Sam Howard was in critical condition. One suspect is now in custody. (SOUNDBITE)(English) KISSIMMEE POLICE CHIEF, JEFF O'DELL, SAYING: "I am excited to tell you that we have charged Everett Glenn Miller, 10-5 of 71 with first degree murder." In Jacksonville, Florida, a group of officers came under fire as they walked toward a house where a man with a high-powered rifle was threatening three people inside, police said. The suspect was fatally shot in an ensuing gunfight, and one officer was hospitalized in critical condition while another was listed as stable. In the third incident, two Pennsylvania State Police troopers were wounded and a suspect killed in an exchange of fire at a market in Fairchance. Officials have not said if there was any connection between the spate of shootings on Friday night.
