JLR moves into electric car fast lane

All new Jaguar Land Rover cars will be available in an electric or hybrid version from 2020. As Silvia Antonoli reports, Britain's biggest carmaker is the latest to speed up plans to electrify its model range.

They are fast cars, and they are fast moving towards being fossil fuel-free. Jaguar Land Rover is ramping up electrification of its cars. Last year Britain's biggest car maker planned to offer an electric or hybrid version for half of its new models from 2020. It now says greener versions will be available for all its new cars. Demand for electric vehicles is booming. And as Britain and France among others plan to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars within a few decades, this is unlikely to be short-lived. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) RICHARD HUNTER, WILSON KING INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT, SAYING: "The trend is certainly becoming established now towards electric cars obviously one of the big challenges that the industry is facing is simply the amount of miles or kilometres that a car can go on on one single charge remains only days. But technology has nonetheless made made leaps and bounds." Jaguar's boss however seems unfazed by the charging challenge. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) JAGUAR LANDROVER CEO, RALPH SPETH, SAYING: "People can charge their vehicles at home. Filling station will hire fast-charging opportunities and based on the demand the industry will find a solution really to have all these charging stations in place. I am absolutely convinced that this technology can be introduced flawless." The luxury carmaker is not alone in wanting to ride the tide. Nissan has just launched a revamped version of its Leaf car to better take on Tesla's Model 3. It's also planning an electric SUV. The race will no doubt see greener cars multiply on the streets as long as the energy sector can keep up. //
