ROUGH CUT. NO REPORTER NARRATION. Turkish coast guards on Saturday (September 9) said in a statement they intercepted 96 refugees on Friday (8 September) in two different operations as they sailed to Greece from the west coast of Turkey. Footage released by Turkey's coast guard showed migrants on board dinghies as they sailed in the Aegean Sea in both day and night. The vessels were intercepted and the refugees were taken off. In 2016 Turkey agreed to stem the record flow of migrants to Europe in exchange for billions of euros in aid from the European Union and the lifting of short-term visa requirements for Turkish citizens wishing to enter the bloc. Turkey is home to the world's largest refugee population, housing some 2.7 million Syrians and 300,000 Iraqis.
