Chaos and tragedy at a rural Washington state school on Wednesday, as a student carrying two guns opened fire in the halls, killing one classmate and injuring three others before being stopped by a member of staff. Outside the school, parents and student children tried to make sense of the violence. "I just remember I crouched down, and the girl next to me, you could hear her screaming, she had been shot," said one student. Another saying, "In my head, I was like, what's going on, what's happening, what am I seeing right now?" The student who was killed had been trying to convince the shooter to end his rampage, before he was shot dead and the gunman fired on three others. "Fortunately, one of the weapons jammed, he went to the second weapon, the other student did confront him, that's when he lost his life," said Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich. The male shooter hasn't yet been named, but one student told local TV he was "outgoing" and she didn't think he was capable of this sort of attack, though apparently he'd made an ominous post about his plans on social media. According to gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety, the U.S. has had an average of 52 school shootings a year since a gunman killed 26 young children and teachers in Newtown Connecticut in 2012.
