Nine arrested after second night of violent St. Louis protests

For a second night, protests in St. Louis turned violent after a white police officer was acquitted of killing a black man. At least nine people were arrested Saturday night. Linda So reports.

NATS: YOU NEED TO DISPERSE IMMEDIATELY Unrest on the streets of St. Louis for a second night. Protesters clashed with police and at least nine people were arrested. As the night wore on, demonstrators wielding bats and hammers smashed shop windows and hurled trash cans at officers. The violence marring the end of what had been a largely peaceful day of protests. Earlier, a large group marched through an upscale suburban mall forcing stores to close their doors. NATS: "white silence is violence" Demonstrations began peacefully on Friday after a judge acquitted former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley in the 2011 shooting death of 24-year-old Anthony Lamar Smith. Prosecutors argued Stockley planted a gun inside Smith's car after shooting him five times. Protesters immediately took to the streets after the decision was announced. Later that evening, violent confrontations with police ensued. The continuing unrest forcing rock band U2 to cancel their Saturday concert in St. Louis. Singer Ed Sheeran did the same for his Sunday show because of security concerns. Activists are vowing to keep up the pressure and continue protesting.
