Iran will strengthen its missile capabilities and will not seek permission from any country to do so, President Hassan Rouhani said on Friday (September 22) in an undisguised snub to demands by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani in overt defiance of his American counterpart Donald Trump, unveiling a new ballistic missile at a military parade in Tehran. Iranian media stating it can carry multiple warheads. (SOUNDBITE) (Farsi) IRANIAN PRESIDENT HASSAN ROUHANI, SAYING: "We will not just strengthen our missile capabilities, but also our ground forces, air forces and naval forces for the defence of all peoples. We will not seek permission from anyone." Meetings between the countries top diplomats' this week at the U.N. yielded no immediately noticeable deescalation. One source describing the talks to Reuters as "very difficult". The two leaders continuing their tirades against each other on the floor of the General Assembly. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING: "That deal is an embarrassment to the United States." But whether or not the U.S. will actually scrap the 2015 nuclear agreement with Tehran is still up in the air. Trump says he's already made his decision over the matter, but is keeping it close to the chest for now. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING: "I'll let you know. I'll let you know for sure." Not even the United States' closest ally appears to be read-in. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE REX TILLERSON, SAYING: "Prime Minister May asked him if she if he would share it with her and he said 'no'." Despite the saber rattling the door may be open for compromise and a save of face for both sides. Rouhani remains adamant that the nuclear deal cannot be renegotiated. But on Thursday (September 21) said if it has flaws, they can be fixed.
